128kbps mp3s & keeping the original frequency-range. nightmare.

please excuse the tech question...

looking for an app to convert
aiffs to mp3s for mac
that keeps the original
frequency-range
(well - as much as possible).

what i usually use is the "LAME" engine on N2MP3 -
the best app i've used so far,
but still not totally satisfisfied
with it's performance on the setting
"LAME, 128kbps, Best Quality".

higher highs and lower lows inevitable get converted
into, for lack of a more descriptive term, "echoed air".

anybody got a clue about a better app
with a wider range, frequency-wise?
