hearing can be damaged in 2 different ways..either via continual noise at
even low dB levels but also by sudden impulse noise at high db levels. both
can generate permanent threshold shift in hearing. this means that a short
loud sound can do permanent irreparable damage to the structure of the ear.

caleb , as you know from my acoustic trauma project i am sure that i gave my
ears a good work over in the construction/exhibition period..and had immense
difficulties with heath and safety issues....
....in many venues hearing damage can occur even with earplugs as often
people who do use then do so incorrectly and subsequently are not protected.
this whole sound caper is quite a hazard. damn industrial revolution :)

it is correct that the safety guidelines are specified at various dB levels
for different duration's.
