background:

"if you run across someone who pays attention to sounds," said john cage in
his recording of indeterminacy III with david tudor on piano "you will find
that it's the quiet ones they find interesting." this showcase is offered
as supporting evidence of that claim. here are a collection of 11
california based artists who each, through their own unique paths have
arranged sounds in such a way that the audience would do well to pay
attention. although the sounds are often soft they are not intended for the
background.

"lowercase" is a term used by steve roden in 1998 to describe his personal
artistic aesthetic. "'lowercase music' bears "...a certain sense of quiet
and humility; it doesn't demand attention, it must be discovered. the work
might imply one thing on the surface but contain other things beneath. it's
the opposite of capital letters-loud things which draw attention to
themselves [morton] feldman is the perfect lowercase music; it seems
serene, but there is much going on beneath the quiet exterior." steve roden

james coleman set up the unmoderated discussion and announcement e-mail list
"lowercase-sound" to discuss "the disparate group of musics, sound art &
listening experiences that emphasize or include some or all of the
characteristics of low volume, silence,soundscape/environmental/ field
recordings, indeterminacy, psycho/acoustic treatments of space, environment
& context & possible relationships of this work to art in other media
i.e. painting, drawing & film & poetry."

this event collects a diverse collection of artists from across california
who utilize a wide range of source material and working methods
[field-recordings, homemade software, sonification of data, extended
techniques with traditional instruments, etc] to pull the listener closer to
the moment at hand. many of artists have tracks on the soon forthcoming
"lowercase-sound 2002" compilation.
