[OT][tech*talk] dedicated to DSP?

howdy,

i had a good long look at this DSR-Arts Tauron module that 'rw' forwarded. 
looks pretty tastey. my impression is that it would be like having a dedicated 
laptop for something like Reaktor or MSP, only without the waste of having all 
the idiotic "user-friendly" OS, bloatware, software conflicts, hardware 
conflicts and other stuff that makes office-style computers such a joy to work 
with.

which leads me to my question:
are there other stand-alone, dedicated, user-configurable DSP units like the 
Taroun, within the same price range ( <1000 euro), that can stand up to a 
laptop and finally put the cranky little things to bed?
