Re:[OT] [microsound] death of internet radio?



I don't fully understand how the RIAA and these laws work, can anybody shed some light for me? Are labels required by law to be "members" of the RIAA? Couldn't a seperate organization be set-up to represent independant labels who choose to exempt themselves from these rules? If so, web radio stations would just have to stop broadcasting major-label, RIAA affiliated releases, but could continue to play other music. What am I missing here? I've always wondered this about publishing too -- why isn't there an alternative to ASCAP and BMI?
