mixing and levels

i was wondering how y'all (at least those of you that are making music) work with the final mix of your track. im particularly interested in so far as the really minimal compositions go (bernhard gunther, richard chartier, etc)...how do you compensate for the near inaudible elements (or sometimes the entire piece) when you set the levels in the mix? im a little more familiar when theres a more conventional track in question, say techno, but microsound mixes are new to me. any help is appreciated!
