Re: [microsound] symphonic project
From: Bill Jarboe <billjarboe@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>
If you have other ideas about scoring, projects related or alternative(
spin-offs etc.) perhaps I could link to them when I present the completed (
or partially completed ) work.
Actually I've been thinking about proposing a group project like this after
being inspired by Michel Seta's message a couple of days ago about his
guitar/csound composition and all of the recent talk about scores. It would
be nice to do a collaborative composition that would be a change from the
usual remix project and would involve people who don't neccessarily work
according to the sample --> mangle process.
These ideas could be incorporated into what you're proposing or they could
be a separate thing or maybe they're useless :)
Here's what I was thinking...
1. Each performer will receive a written instruction and a visual score in
the form of a quicktime movie.
2. The performer will follow and interpret the score and the written
instructions while recording the performance into a microphone.
3. The performances would then be collected and run through a final digital
process.
We would need:
- The quicktime movie score which could be created collaboratively by
volunteers, taken from something somebody has already made, or it could be a
visual interpretation of an existing score.
-The written instructions. These would be along the lines of "Create
clusters of high bell-like scrapings" or "long, low sustained tones" or they
could be more abstract. Each participant would submit one written
instruction and then they would be re-distributed among the performers.
Maybe we would have 2 written instructions for each performer to change
between according to the score.
-A final process to run the files through in the form of a Max/Msp patch or
a Csound process or similar. The processing would include time-based
changes that would follow or provide counterpoint to the score.
-The only techincal prerequisite for performers who wish to participate is
the ability to record into a microphone and submit that as an mp3. This
would hopefully encourage non-musicians to participate.
