Agreed, responding like that ("idiot") almost seems childishly defensive. 
The implied elitist tone even serves to reinforce his criticism
to some degree. It's just not his bag baby. 

It is interesting though that basic silence elicited such an emotional
response from him, angering him so much. 'Art' is obviously of 
some importance and I wonder what expectations he had, given the 
article's discussion. 

Most of the friends I've given my music to can't stand it, and often 
their taste in quality is simply horrific to me. However, if someone
told me that my music angered them to the extent expressed here, I'd 
know I'm doing something right : )

Meh.  To each his own.  I rarely throw the term "idiot" around whne people
don't appreciate the same music I do.

And hey, as an artist myself, I always relished these reactions as much as
the people who love what I do.  At least you had some sort of effect on him.
