Hi kevin!
Im not the best person to advice you here since im too young in the list and
in the "art" but I can tell you there are some nice advices in the
microsound server in the news section about soft and gear.
In my opinion when you talk about software like trackers, synths,
sequencers, anything goes. What you should seek, always in my opinion, is a
software or a sound programming language that brings you close to the inner
working of the computer. To me only that approach makes it worth picking a
computer to do music. But you want names right?
Audiomulch think is a good beginning.
Reaktor is more complex and flexible kind of audiomulch.
Then you should be ready for Max-Msp.
Sequencers like Cubase or Logic to me work always as auxiliary to these
soft.
But what really excites me, personally, is Csound. There is an excellent
book, good tutorial, rich site, and a friendly great assistance to newbies
in the newsgroup.
Others will tell you about supercollider but its only for mac. Csound is
free and multiplataform. (I use both pc and mac)
But to start and to learn I recommend the way I started, devouring the
Curtis Roads Computer Music Tutorial. We are near summer near vacations it
would be the perfect reading to get ready...
But the better now is to listen what more experienced people have to say to
you.
If you need more precise info better mail me off list because what I could
say to you is too well known of everyone here and you don¹t want to bore
right? And also because the vocation of this list is not tech talk.
Good debut!
Edo
P.S I strongly advice you to not start a deja vu mac/pc discussion. These is
one of the few things eu wouldn¹t mind in making tabu of it. :)
