One of the best things I've ever read about cultural formations of this
kind is Raymond Williams' "Sociology of Culture." which develops a
pretty profound analysis of our current situation.

....and there's of course Bourdieu's study "Distinction: a Social
Critique of the Judgement of Taste," but it's not concerned with
suggesting possibilities.
