Re: [microsound] Re: monitor speakers

I have seen this type of comment come up a couple of times on this list
when it comes to conversations about monitors. I would like to point
out that studio reference monitors are supposed to have a flat frequency
response, not sound warm or harsh or anything like that. Their purpose
afaik, there is no such thing as 100% flat frq
response. there are way too much elements
involved, from size and shape of the casing to
doppler distortion that every studio monitors are
basicly a certain compromise. however, it is true
that the idea is to have a flat frq.res. but, it's
not true that they don't sound different; for
example Yamaha NS10 are total boxy crap if you
look at its sound, however, everybody knows how
they sound so a lot of studios are using. on the
other hand i heard Mackies sound nice and warm.
while it's true you don;t want speakers so that
every music you play or work on on them sounds
nice and warm - as it will sound elsewhere crap,
it's good to consider what's the sound you can
work with best: harsh, warm, agressive or
whatever. whichever monitors you'll get, you have
to adapt to them and understand what kind of
frequency picture they give.
