It's not microsound-ish, but I'd suggest taking a look at Gilbert
Rouget's _Music and Trance_ if you haven't read it.

A fascinating book, and although it's focus is "posession cults," he
spend a  lot of time discussing the distinction between posession and
shamanism. And the function of music in each context.
