Yes, I have read "Ocean of Sound" by David Toop. It is superb!  If you are interested in understanding music over the last 100 years which creates an atmosphere instead of a story, this book helps to explain how it happened.  Toop is also a composer, so he understands music from inside the creative process.  His writing is not academic, or dry, but very rich with associations.  I recommend it - also his other book "Exotica."
