This is a complex subject as the degree of influence is quite varied.
The Hausa of Nigeria for example are Islamic, but the native Hausa
religion coexists alongside Islam.

There are professional Hausa musicians who play for royalty and
occupational groups. This is fairly unusal in Africa. An Islamic
influence can be seen in the instruments: long brass horns called Kakaki
and the double reeded Algaitha.

The spread of Islam didn't replace the Hausa language, which still
carries a tonal link to music...
