digital music

the term "digital music" is used today by academic centers (read: computer
music centers in universities) who want to "update" their image by
embracing a broader discipline i.e., teaching electro-acoustic composition
as well as DSP theory (frequency domain manipulation of signal)...the term
also attempts to attract new students to their program by "hippifying" the
academic image... digital music signifies that the student will be exposed
to current cutting edge developments and ideas in digital technology as it
relates to sound/music...
in my travels I have also found the term "digital music" in use primarily
by academics to describe the type of
electro-acoustic/computer/electronic/acousmatic/etc music coming out of
those centers...many flyers and email posts read: <paraphrase> "ABC
University presents an evening of digital music" </paraphrase>
just sub to the ICMC email list for a year and watch the posts around fall
and spring announcing these types of concerts when the students are all
busy creating and/or presenting new works
