It seems to me that the polemic between samples and sound have been
collapsed technologically, historically and critically and to understand the
two as necessarily discrete systems becomes counter-productive. The idea of
sampling as easy/skilless/etc compared to 'internally-generated' sound as
skillfull/etc invokes the out-dated "anyone could do that/but now THAT¹S
art" cliché. There ARE concrete distinctions between the two but perhaps
they are facilitated by a set of much more complex discourses and one way to
look at them are maybe through notions of authorship, strategy and framing.
