[announcement] Praxis workshop & concert in Helsinki

Äänen Lumo proudly presents:

October 9th, 11:00 - 20:00: Sticky Fingers - Workshop on free improvisation
mentored by Keith Rowe and Oren Ambarchi. NIFCA, Suomenlinna, Helsinki.
Participation fee 10 euros, registrations to praxis@xxxxxxxxxxx

As part of Keith Rowe's and Oren Ambarchi's first visit to Finland, Charm
of Sound in cooperation with NIFCA will organize a workshop on free
improvisation in October 9th at Suomenlinna. The workshop will reflect on
and address in practice the topics of listening and reacting as key skills
of the improvisor's craft, of social dynamics of collective improvisation,
and of musical instrument as an object in need of constant reapproach and
reinterpretation. Those situations in which improvising musicians are not
committed to any predetermined style or expectations regarding the musical
outcome will thus be shown to bear a singular musical value. At the same
time the participants are encouraged to search for new playing methods in
addition to the polishing of conventional virtuosity. The workshop is open
to all interested parties regardless of stylistic, technical or
instrumental provisos. Since improvisation is primarily a practical art
developed through personal experience, the participants are encouraged to
bring with them the instrument deemed most suitable and take an active
part in the practice of free improvisation.

The workshop will be concluded by a duo concert of Rowe and Ambarchi.

October 10th 20:00 - 01:00: Prepare Your Guitars!
Keith Rowe (UK), Oren Ambarchi (Australia), Es (Finland), Topias Tiheäsalo
(Finland). Jumo Jazz Club, Helsinki, tickets 8 euros.

Praxis, a new club organized by the Charm of Sound collective, sets its
first season ago at the Jumo Jazz Club in October 10th. With its focus
keenly on experimental live music and improvisation, the club could hardly
have a more suitable initiation than a night dedicated to guitar
idiosyncracies. For, after all, the guitar has admittedly been proved the
instrument most capable of constant rebirth in countless unlikely
contexts. To demonstrate this, we have invited to Helsinki the founding
father of the tabletop six-string, Keith Rowe from England, together with
Oren Ambarchi of Australia and two young Finnish guitarists, Topias
Tiheäsalo and Sami Sänpäkkilä. With these musicians heeding to the
imperative "Prepare Your Guitars!", highly divergent variations on the
most widely spread string instrument can be expected. Sänpäkkilä?s
melodrama, Tiheäsalo's austere intensity and Ambarchi?s tendency to
alienate the sonic phenomena from their physical origin can, however, also
be considered as branches of a shared tradition rooting on Rowe's resolute
metamusical aspiration to investigate and eliminate the defining power
structures between music and sound. This first Praxis night offers a
wonderful chance to hear in practice the variance of phenomena a single
radical innovation may generate.

Produced by the Charm of Sound collective, Praxis is a frequent forum
intended to sound the most challenging currents in contemporary music.
Praxis does not wish to be limited to any particular stylistic framework,
although improvisation, both electronic and acoustic, will be a common
denominator for most events. Apart from concerts, film displays, lectures
and workshops will be organized.
