Re: [microsound] are all microsound/contemporary music/etc fans composers??
--
In case this topic hasn't already been fully exhausted yet...
From my experience, the ratio of composers to fans is extremely
close. I don't know very many people who are interested in microsound
(or experimental music as a whole) who don't also create music of
their own. It can seem frustrating at times, but if it comes down to
playing at or attending a show (or playing a cd, an mp3 or whatever)
with people who don't make the music themselves -- and will do
nothing but ridicule it because they don't understand it -- vs.
attending a show, etc. with a group of people who all make the same
type of music themselves -- and will be respectful of the
performance/recording -- I'll choose the latter rather than the
former.
I also agree with not wanting to categorize who is a "real" artist or
not...I especially disagree with the comment made about so-called
"real" artists being the people who don't need a "real" job in order
to live. Only a precious few artists ever make enough money from
their art to support themselves. Anyone who claims having a job
negates the ability to make "real" art is an elitist, IMHO.
