just for the sake of your curiosity:
actually there is never "silence" during a phone-call. Researchers have
seen that if a person isn't hearing anything, he thinks that the call
has fallen down. So inside newer phones (e.g. mobile phones) there is a
noise generator that gives you the idea that the oder is in silence: as
said by cray, silence is not trasmitted but noises are generated for the
pleasure of the people phoning (in fact it is called "comfort noise").
