YEs it must be that way for stereo files.  If not, you can get phase
cancellation.  This work of course with "real" stereo files.  If one makes
some field recordinsg with two OMNIdirectionnasl mic then the stereo field
is innacurate, in the sense that our ears works like 2 UNIdirectionnal
microphones.  IN this case, an ORTF microphone setup is the most common mic
setup to conserve a good stereo field.
