>From my own experiments I think that I  remember rhythm more than melody. In fact if we remember a melody aren't we remembering the rhythm also? I mean isn't that an important part of the melody? A melody is not just a system of consecutive pitches there is a certain phrasing and structure that is built from rhythm. 

There are some studies dealing with rhythm which deal with the heartbeat in the mother's womb. They are in "Psychology of Music" edited Donald Hodges. This may be something to delve into also. Some of it is a little too clincal but there some interesting studies that may be of use.
