Metastaseis

Hi,

I know Metstaseis isn't an electronic work, but I have a few questions on it, and someone on another mailing list said perhaps someone here could help. I'm writing a term paper on Metastaseis (due Thursday) for my 19th and 20th c music class, and I'm having a bit of trouble. My background in music history is rather minimal and only comes up to about 1900 or so (it seems odd that with a week left in the semester, the title of the course includes "20th c music" but...).

I can come up with things to say about the first and last section, but the middle section is a mystery to me (and hopefully the parts without divisi writing are included here, cos I'm not really sure what's going on there either). And the Fibonacci/modulor numbers are not making themselves apparent.

Basically, can anyone shed some light on this work, specifically these points ? Is there any kind of article for hipsters who want to sound lk they understand 20th-century avant garde music ? Not that I'll ultimately be content with that level of familiarity; it's just that I don't really have time right now to gain a full understanding of probability theory or the kinetic theory of gases (oh yeah, where does this come into Metastaseis ?). Anyway, not being familiar w the list, I don't know if this is easy stuff for everyone, so please email me directly if you can help (I'll get it faster anyway). Thanks in advance,

Dan

And I've been working w these texts: Varga and Matossian, as well as Art/Sciences: Alloys and Formalized Music (though I've hardly bothered past page 10 w the latter).
