I haven't seen the new one yet, but yes, Tarkovsky's adaptations of books
were a bit personalized and probably weren't intended to be very
faithful to the original novels. In fact, he really didn't like the
sci-fi aspect of the certain stories he made films about because he felt
that the elements were too distracting from what he was trying to convey
on the screen, so he minimized those aspects. Later, he regretted not
having done away with them all together. So yes, two different
approaches. This would also partially explain the "low-budget" feel to
the sci-fi elements in his films.
And not to be predictable and to sound opportunistic... ;-) but I do
wish to mention that for those who haven't seen the and/OAR website over
the past few months, it has made mention of an upcoming Tarkovsky
dedication disc that is slated in January to feature some very fine
artists: Ven Voisey (v.v.), Yannick Dauby, sawako, logoplasm, Phillip
Pietruschka & Matthew Davis, Jon Tulchin, & mysef as well. Each person
has chosen a film to use as inspiration for a soundwork. I have been
working in coordination with Trond Trondson of the Nostalghia website to
help procure permission for the usage of film images (Criterion). It's an
idea I've had for a long time, I'm looking forward to finally seeing it
materialize.
Best, Dale
