Yes, and see his "Vive L'Amour" for an example of a film in which 
environmental sound, rather than dialog or music, tells (I want to 
say "shows") a large part of the story.  The emptiness of the final 
scene, with only traffic noise underscoring the tears, is oddly more 
emotionally moving than any slathering of John Williams strings could 
hope to be...
