c e n t i b e l 3.0 and Everything 3.0 are now online.
c e n t i b e l 3.0 (http://centibel.vze.com) mixes contemporary
"concert music" sensibilties with digital aesthetics, presenting works
by a a l , Andrian Pertout and Sergio Luque. a a l 's "la curva
invisibile" was composed from the small sounds found in the pauses of a
1968 recording of Mozart's Requiem. It transforms the "silences" found
in those pauses into virtual sonic spaces. Andrian Pertout merges
Reichian minimalism, North Indian "Hindustani" tala, Cage's prepared
piano, analogue synthesis, DSP, and the Disklavier piano in "Panc Hazar
Chakra Kai Andar" ("Within Five Thousand Cycles"), an engaging and
rhythmically driven piece for multi-tracked Disklavier. Sergio Luque
unleashes a digital clamour with "ssst", conjuring images of a virtual
ensemble performing in an slowly exploding concert hall haunted by
microsonic ghosts. Luque's "frio" balances the hubbub with a synthetic
meditation on timbre and stasis.
Everything 3.0 (http://everything.does.it or direct link at
http://www.8bitrecs.com/phil/index.html) presents Missing, Inc.'s
"Making Quiet Tracks Through Dense Huts, " a haunting and subtle blend
of dark ambience and mysterious imaginary languages. This piece was also
presented in the last edition of Everything. However, due to a broken
link, the track was unavailable for much of the time the site was up;
apologies to the artist. In compensation, the piece is back for us all
to enjoy, complete with an actual working link! Joining this track is
hinterlandt's "sinework5," a polyrhythmic sinewave smorgasbord, and The
Beige Channel's "Nice Belt". Its companion piece, "Bent Lice" will be
presented in a future edition of Everything.
Archives for c e n t i b e l are now also online, courtesy of
neverkink.net. Thanks also to granulat.org and 8bitrecs.com for
soundfile hosting.
As usual, both c e n t i b e l and Everything are looking (and
listening) for new works. While Everything's mandate is fairly open, c e
n t i b e l is more focussed on works that explore concepts of
minimalism and minimality; quiets, silences, and listenings; the nature
of the digital audio medium, "digitality", and (post-)digital
politics/aesthetics. c e n t i b e l also challenges contributors to
move beyond conventions of the microsound genre ("clicks and cuts,"
etc.) to help evolve new aesthetic tendencies that take advantage of the
microsound's aesthetic insights while offering a way past the impasse
that those insights have tended to produce. Digital audio works are
welcomed, along with works in other media: images, net.art, digital
video, Flash movies, finger-painting, etc. Email the centibel curator at
hellomynameisphil at mail2sound dot com for more details, or mail your
work directly to:
