Re: [microsound] hidden from the audience

Masks are great. I aslo developed the shadow theatre performance concept for
our Gnoy&Salo multimedia noise shows. We play behind a curtain made of light
coloured fabric with bright lights or abstract video projected from behind
our backs. This way the audience sitting in the dark can only see our
blurred shadows moving. This lets their imagination produce images,
influenced only by the sound flow, but on the other hand keeps them
concentrated on what's happening. When there's no spectacle at all, or even,
as in many electronic performances nowadays, there are some visuals not
connected with the music, one can easily get distracted by other people in
the room coughing, scratching, getting up to get their drinks, etc. With the
shadows it's more like hearing someone breathe and watch his/her chest
raising and falling - there's a tense flow of interconnected events. When
there's no tension, you can't get involved, and then the thoughts of your
unpayed bills can ruin the experience altogether.

or maybe we could adjust our inability to see things that aren't
particularly stricking at first glance.
> i am personally a big fan of an escape from the stage. and not even in a
physical sense, but perhaps even in the subtlety of a mask. a mask allows
for a whole new experience because a person performing with a mask on will
likely lose most if not all of their inhibitions to be raw, and produce
energy not yet seen outside the confines of his/her bathroom-- mirror
steamed, naked body, etc. i have enjoyed this masked performance on a few
occasions. it's easier for a person to get naked if you can't see their
face. the more we lose these inhibitions with masks, the potential to lose
the masks and let the raw shine through becomes more evident.

nontraditional is being displayed. i don't mean that we should lose our
ability to constructively criticize.
