there is a great interview with Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze on the WGA
(writers guild of america) website
<http://www.wga.org/WrittenBy/1202/kaufman.html>
in which Kaufman talks about not directing meaning but letting the viewer
produce meaning for themselves...a more articulate quote below:

CK: "I try to write things so that there's an opportunity to have various
experiences. I don't want to dictate anything. It would be really great for
different people to have different experiences, or even for the same person
to have different experiences at different times. That's my goal. If I could
accomplish that, I would feel like I was doing well. To say that my movie
was about searching for hope, or not searching for hope--I'd rather not."
