standard sound cards

hello folks,

i was thinking in the shower... is there any way of, say, using a standard 
PC sound card like a multi-track card, with the help of some fancy helpful 
software?  i thought you might be able to do things like a 4-track.  so 
you'd use the line-in left/right channels as two separate tracks, and then 
use the mic-in left/right channels as the same, simultaneously.  that way 
maybe you could mic up a drumset or something, recording everything to 
separate tracks, mixing them later.  what do you think -- impossible?
