Re: [microsound] info on mastering
Hello Claudio,
If you live in the u s there is a magazine called 'tape op'
http://www.tapeop.com which offer a free subscription. They publish
frequent articles on mastering techniques , different viewpoints on the
subject. From what I've listened of your music however , I get the impression
that most traditional mastering techniques won't do you much good since they
are mostly working with analog tape or tape emulation and striving for a
rather different effect.
You will probably want to add 'dither'; this enables the mastering
application to write good 16 bit audio ( using CD for this example) instead
of just 'chopping off' 8 bits from 24 , or 16 from 32. Don't fuss it though
, if it sounds good to you it sounds good ,and please avoid or be sparing
with the compression.
One procecdure which sometimes works if the sound is too 'closed in' is
upping the sampling rate and then 'taking a picture*' of that during the CD
making process. Pieces often sound too 'closed in ' to me though , which is
one reason I don't have a car . So just ignore me and get on with your
business....
Bill
*you notice how one gets into design metaphors and further away from any
actual music-making when discussing the mastering process? -probably not a
good sign .
