Re: [microsound] a quick reminder from the mgmt
I am not so sure, whether the discussion really left microsound ... of course,
argueing about Nietzsche's definition of "ressentiment" seems far-fetched at
first glance considering the scope of the microsound list, but still --- it
does make a difference if you make music BECAUSE you are annoyed by mainstream
music and because you are angry at those who make a lot of money and if you
harbour those feelings until you think more about the music industry than doing
your own sound investigations or whether you belong to those people who start
making music because they want to find out something, because they are
interested in the sounds and how they relate to experience and to the larger
picture of music. I think that makes quite a difference: the difference
between envy-reaction (ressentiment) and creativity-action.
And also the point about Jesus and christianity is of broader generality and
applicability. There is a similar difference between -- let's say --
Schoenberg's music and the 'Schoenberg school' of musicians. The point that
some creative event which proved to be rebellious or was a rebellion later on
turned into a system with rules and regulations and a new canon is pertinent.
If every discussion as soon as it seems to digress from the immediate scope of
musical tools, instruments or recordings to questions of a more general scale
should be redirected into other special lists, where would be the forum to get
the larger picture and how it relates to microsound?
Of course, there is the danger of losing oneself in details but I don't mind to
be reminded of other people (philosophers, artists, theorists etc.) who thought
about some questions before I get lost in reinventing the umbrella for the 34th
time. There is this sentence about those who don't know history or don't want
to know it and might therefore be condemned to repeat it.
Can you really divide your life into neat compartments: me as a microsounder,
me as a family person, me as a political person, me as an emotional being, me
as a cat-squeezer, me as a philosopher ...?
So far I experienced the microsound list as an interesting and open forum (with
the possible exception of the cat-squeezing debate, where I still don't
understand why it was getting so heated towards the end driving people to
unsubscribe) and if I am not interested in a thread or can't follow it because
it gets too technical I don't read it word by word and that's it.
