OT? Re: [microsound] mastering limiting
not sure if this isn't OT..
if you are familiar with compression, think limiting as a kind of
compression with a heavy (high) ratio and very quick attack / release.
limiting makes audio beyond a certain point flat. finding that certain point
could be tricky. i found that using digital level meters helps me a lot.
beyond a certain level there are only short peaks and it's easy for a human,
while watching, to distinguish the level beyond which it's safe to apply
limiting.
moderate limiting goes unnoticed by your ears. heavy limiting does the radio
thing and gives you a headache in an hour or so?
in the digital domain, limiting involves some kind of prediction, i.e. the
look-ahead thing. manually controlling and raising the release time would
kindof make your audio sound pumping. some of today's modern limiters use
automatic release control but sometimes it's good to turn it off because it
ruins atypical recordings.
such a heavy compression is i guess good in the microsound domain because
the sounds you can find in recordings vary from very quiet to very loud in
the very same track. limiting allows for further amplification, thus making
audio de-facto louder. but the more limiting, the less dynamics (difference
between the quietest and the loudest point). plus, the more limiting, the
more amplification, the more noise (both digital and analogue domain). so
try limiting at the very final stage of a track and never overdo it.
my 2 cents
