audio/MIDI interfaces for OS X?

Any comments/recommendations about audio and MIDI interfaces for OS X?

I'm considering eventual purchase of either a Mobile I/O or a 
Firestation, but in the short term I need something cheap that will 
cover both audio and MIDI on a G4 Powerbook. I've done some research 
but would like recommendations from the trenches.
