Georgina Born. (1995). _Rationalizing Culture._ U of California Press,
pp. 159-163.
Born, an anthropogist, did interesting "fieldwork" at IRCAM in the 80's,
and this was one of her findings. It seems the software interface for
something called the 4X contained code which was useful for military
applications, so the US military requested a copy of the code, which
Boulez promptly sent. The programmer was mortified. Apparently it wasn't
the first time something like this had happened. No money seems to
change hands (at least not directly), but there is a not entirely
unfamiliar relationship between the US military and IRCAM, according to
Born. Doubtless it helps with finding sources of funding. I just brought
that up as an example because there are lots of links between computers
and the military, among other things.
