hummm.....
 as far as i understand it, and i'm no expert, gift giving economies are
usually part of a larger economic structure, and don't tend to exist as the
sole economy of a community. they tend to be a way that a community holds
itself together, by turning an individuals surplus time, goods, ect into
art, festivals, ect (sacrificing it?) and then giving it to the community
with the understanding that this kind of giving will be reciprocated at
some point. 
 i don't really think good will has much to do with a gift giving economy,
because usually there is a process of inclusion/exclusion involved where
those that participate are considered part of the community and those that
don't are shunned out of it. this also tends to function as a quality
control, as well.
i think these kind of economies exist many many times and palces, this list
is a good example maybe, but like i said, i don't think people survive off
only a gift giving economy. although, they seem to be somewhat instramental
in forming, disolving, and maintaing social ties.
