Framework - phonography/field recording; contextual and decontextualized
sound activity
presented by Patrick McGinley
For those that don't already know, this Friday, Valentine's Day, is I Love
Resonance Day. We have been granted our license extension, the catch being
the station is now desperately in need of funds to be able to continue. I
Love Resonance Day will feature special programming and the opportunity to
show your support. There will be fundraising on the day, along with a
benefit auction running from the ResonanceFM website. Please show your
support in any way possible, even if it's just to drop us a note.
Recordable feedback from our listeners is what made the extension possible
in the first place! I have included the most recent ResFM Newsletter at the
end of this playlist (you can receive the newsletter by joining the
ResonanceFM discussion list: resonancefm-subscribe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx).
Thanks, now on to the show!
This edition of Framework featured a project by US artist Steve Peters
entitled Here-ings. Having been invited to create a site-specific work for
The Land, a forty acre natural site in New Mexico, Peters took 24 hours of
field recordings - one during each hour of the day, at a different location
of the site, on various days spanning one year. The sounds were then
spliced together, 3 minutes per hour, in a sonic representation, not only of
a day in The Land, but a year. Peters then wrote 24 'songs,' poetic
transcriptions of each 3 minute piece, which were carved in to 24 stone
benches and installed permanently at the original recording location.
Here-ings comprises these recordings and a book with writings on the
project, the 'songs' themselves, and a detailed breakdown of the sounds in
each track.
We also had the opportunity tonight to catch up on several recordings that
have been waiting too long in the 'to play' pile - Dale Lloyd, Jon Tulchin,
Michael Prime - as well as to play some new submissions - Anders Ostberg,
Jason Lescalleet and a taster from the long-awaited Field Recordings and
Manipulations compilation (more from that one next time).
Again, we are always looking for material for the show, whether raw field
recordings or field recording based composition. Send material, released or
not, on any format, to the address below. We are also hoping to have live
performances as often as possible, so if you are in or passing through
London please get in touch!

Resonance104.4fm Newsletter (7)
(the seventh of our sporadical mailing to our contributors, friends,
supporters: please circulate as you see fit - and encourage your friends to
tune in)
LICENCE EXTENSION NEWS
We have now received a response from The Radio Authority to our request
that they extend our licence till December 2003. The good news is that last
Thursday their Access Radio sub-committee met and agreed to our request
(pending reclearance of the frequency, which should be a formality).
Thanks to the hundreds among our listeners who indicated their support for
our work; and to the visionary Soo Williams and her colleagues at the Radio
Authority.
Now the sting in the tail: we need urgently to raise funds. If you would
like us to continue, then a) read on about our fund-raising initiatives
below; and b) let us know (if you have not already done so) that you are
listening. Again, we urge EVERYONE to take this opportunity to let us know
your thoughts. We love to hear from you.

"I LOVE RESONANCE FM DAY"
This St Valentine's Day (14th February) we are throwing our usual schedule
up in the air and devoting the day to a Fund-Raising Special: "I Love
Resonance104.4fm Day". We keep repeating that we want and need our
listeners to donate money to help us continue; and the method we have
chosen here is to ask you to make pledges to the station, or to bid in our
104.4fm auction.
Pledges? You the listener promise us money for either an immediate and
fugitive reward (e.g. we play you a song by their favoured artist on air or
dedicate a broadcast to your mum). Or you pledge money in exchange for some
future reward (e.g. a signed photograph, tickets to a show or concert,
something valuable that we have been able to get from our well-connected
well-wishers).
The Auction? We are gathering rare objects of desire that we think you will
want to bid for: hard to get records (The Wicker Man soundtrack complete
with a piece of burnt timber from the film; signed Arthur Lee record; rare
as hen's teeth Ivor Cutler single; going for a song Faust box set;
collectable photographs and so forth); amazing treats (go drinking with
Harry Haward of Calling all Pensioners); unique items that will (we hope)
have you canceling your subscription to the Radio Times and your holiday
in the Algarve - and sending Resonance104.4fm the money instead.
February 14th is a day to spend glued to the radio: on air we will have
many once in a lifetime offers at bargain prices, unusual prizes, savvy
bribes and temptations we hope you simply cannot refuse. All in a good
cause. For starters, go now to the (regularly updated) AUCTION section on
our new front page at the http://www.resonancefm.com website, where you can
of course still find full listings of all our seventy-odd regular shows and
unique Clear Spots. The website also boasts a FORUM where you can interact
with other listeners and the Resonance team. Use it.

RESONANCE IN PRINT
The current issues of Dazed & Confused and Record Collector both contain
articles on Resonance104.4fm. D&C boasts an exquisite double-spread full
colour picture of ClingRadio activity, RC has some nice black and white
snaps of Resonance regulars.
If you want a printed version of our latest schedule, then email
ed@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with your street address (subject: "Radio Calendar").
A new calendar is ready now and will be sent to you immediately.
-------
PUBLICITY
We always need our listeners' help in spreading the word about
Resonance104.4fm. Word of mouth and grassroots activity is straightforward
and it works. Why not email half a dozen friends today and tell them about
the station, recommending your favourite show? And ask them to get in touch
with us. We are very happy to hear from new listeners: our audience
includes London taxi drivers, schoolchildren, award-winning novelists,
activists, comedians and the entire gamut of the city's inhabitants. If you
can distribute some Resonance104.4fm postcards to you local pubs, record
shops, clubs, concert venues, libraries and so forth, do let us know and we
will send you a quantity of them. If you're staying in, tune in to
Resonance: if you are going out, take our postcards with you.
-------
DONATIONS
Resonance is free to users, but we urgently seek patrons of the arts, rich
AND poor. This means you. Resonance104.4fm seeks donations. We are
seriously short of funds and it has now come to the point where we are
forced to turn to you, our supporters, to help us maintain the high
standards we have established. After NINE months of constant activity, wear
and tear are taking their toll - on equipment, furniture, people. And we
want swiftly to expand our studio facility so that we can make more and
better programmes on site. Are you able to make a donation? You can do so
by sending us a cheque (payable to "LMC Ltd"); or by paying money directly
into our bank account (please email ed@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx in confidence if
you do this, so that we can keep track of donations): as much or as little
as you please. Every bit helps.
Thanks!
Our bank details are as follows:
Account number: 65026168
Sort code: 08 02 28
Account name: London Musicians' Collective Ltd
Bank: The Co-operative Bank, 80 Cornhill, London EC3V 3NJ
LMC is a registered charity and for some there may be tax advantages in
making a donation. Call Ed on 0207403 1922 if you need to discuss this.
