"Chain of Events"
a collaborative performance by
Brandon LaBelle - Achim Wollscheid - j.frede

February 11th [tuesday], 2003 - 8pm - $5 donation

"Chain of Events" is a collaborative performance where individual works =
are
made but elements within an extended event. Each artist will perform for =
a
short time, until the next artist follows, feeding off, referring to,
refracting or disrupting the audio of the first. This procedural "chain" =
will
continue until the piece has "circulated" beyond any recognizable trace. =
An
audible "exquisite corpse", the final work will multiply perspectives =
onto the
auratic.

Brandon LaBelle is a sound artist and writer from Los Angeles. His work =
with sound installation and performance aims to draw attention to the =
phenomenal dynamics of sound as it is found within spaces and objects, =
public events and interactions, language and the body. Through =
exhibiting and performing his work engages the specific conditions of =
each space and event, drawing upon architectural anomalies and utilizing =
found-objects and environmental characteristics in the work itself. =
Through a performative interaction with materials, found-sound, built =
electronics and contact microphones, the space is used as a "live =
instrument". Through this process, the body itself as a sound-emitting =
object is implicated, drawing the complexities of identity and language =
into the work. LaBelle's interest in site-specificity reflects a desire =
to consider the relationship between art and a broader social =
environment.

LaBelle has been actively making sound-related work for the past 8 =
years, performing and exhibiting in art galleries and museums, as well =
as unique locations, around the United States and abroad. His work has =
been featured at the 9th International Symposium of Electronic Arts in =
Liverpool and Manchester, Sampling Rage Festival in Berlin, the ICA =
London, Roulette Music in New York, the Arizona State University Museum, =
and as part of the "Sound as Media" exhibition held at ICC in Tokyo, =
January 2000. His second CD, "Maps of Tenderness", was released in 1999 =
on the SELEKTION label from Germany; his recent "Text =3D CD" CD is a =
collection of language-based sound-works. He is also the co-editor of =
the recent publication, "Site of Sound: of Architecture and The Ear", =
published by Errant Bodies, and curator of the Beyond Music Series at =
Beyond Baroque Center, Los Angeles.

j.frede is an experimental music composer who works with sound ranging =
from field recordings to electro-acoustic atmospheres, microsound =
subtleties to ambient soundscapes, live performances to audio =
installations. Currently Frede is working with field recordings of both =
natural and urban environments and digital compositions built using =
acoustic sounds. When performing live j.frede utilizes a variety of PC =
based software to write compositions in real time using found sounds and =
digital manipulations.=20

Frede has performed at a number of notable festivals and venues =
including The Emerging Artists Performance Festival (bmoca), The [mnml] =
Series (mca/d), The F.A. Festival (finland), Music For a New Mess =
(7hz/S.F.), The Denver Atonal Festival, The Telluride International =
Experimental Cinema Exposition (telluride,CO), Open Late Series (mca/d), =
Trust:assemble (WY), Visual Soundings Series (mca/d), Datatransfer =
Festival (prague) Rhizome.LA, Sonique Series (CH), Bip Hop Generation =

presented with include Kim Cascone, Scanner, E.A.R., Yasunao Tone, Achim =
Wollscheid, Giuseppe Ielasi, Jeph Jarmen, Oliva Block, Brandon Labelle, =
Janek Schaefer, Bernhard Gunter & Jason Kahn.

Achim Wollscheid is a media artist whose work over the past 20 years has =
been at the forefront of experimental music. He has performed and =
presented installation projects internationally. His work in sound has =
led to an interest in the relation between sound, light and =
architectural space, which he pursues through public, interactive and =
electronic projects. He is a founding member of SELEKTION, an =
organisation for the production and distribution of information systems. =
His book, The Terrorized Term, was published by SELEKTION in 1999

"...Wollscheid is a conceptual soundster: He hooks up contact mics to =
office buildings and records the sounds the windowpanes make, creates =
rattles out of pieces of styrofoam dissolved in acid and documents the =
invisible sounds that household appliances make...."

Kenneth Goldsmith, NY Press

"It is my intention to look at "radio" as an "instrument", as kind of a =
tool - and not to, as it's usually done, consider it as a (neutral) =
multiplier between a sender and a receiver - to consider it as a tool, =
whose different modes of function become actual when activated in an =
experimental manner. Because music can't be imagined without a social =
background, it's present total integration in the media as an important =
function within the social apparatus poses the question: under which =
conditions does the interpretation of the term "social" take place? This =
even more so because in the "social music" project artists from =
different cultural areas participate, and so the interpretations of what =
"social" is, quite naturally, differ. There is no such thing as an =
explicit topic or issue for this broadcast - in the sense of something =
being spoken about. It's rather something which is spoken into. "Into" =
not in the sense of a direction, but as an attempt to create a more or =
less stable connection between the different forms of studio equipment, =
and to deliver an example for a discretion of hierarchies." (Achim =
Wollscheid)
