time-structure, xenakis interview, tools
What I'm really after in my reading right now is to compare different
arrangement methodologies. What are the criteria different composers use to set
up the structure of a piece? DJ-friendly, algorithmic processes, indeterminant
processes, free improv... what are some other systems you all are using, or
know of other composers using? While the labels are a start, I'm especially
interested in the details of these systems... any URLs would be highly
appreciated.
Anyway, while I've been hunting down this info, I feel a little haunted by the
question of the place of our tools. I found this interview with Xenakis
(relatively old, 1992). At the beginning, Xenakis is talking about the use of
the computer in music. It's interesting to read his perspective; a quick
summary might be that the computer is definitely useful for working out ideas.
I believe he says the message of a piece is judgement-filtered bits of the
"self" that are cultivated with the aid of the computer.
