There was a similar project at that same time that resulted in 
dismantling of light rail in the Bay Area, particularly in the East 
Bay. San Francisco proper still has a passable (compared to LA) 
system with light rail, electric trolleys, and cable cars. BART (Bay 
Area Rapid Transit) is meant to tie together both sides of the bay.
