Performing live at the Showroom Cinema, Sheffield :
Carston Nicolai (Germany)
Using electronic sound and visual art as a kind of hybrid-tool=20
Carsten Nicolai creates his own microscopic view of creative=20
processes. His world looks more like a laboratory - constantly=20
morphing in space and time, influenced by the impulses of this media=20
world, sound the message as code - becomes the primary theme via his=20
visualised sound performance.
Nobukazu Takemura (Japan)
As a composer and musician under the keyword of "child's view",=20
Nobukazu Takemura flows freely back and forth across the world of=20
music from experimental and contemporary classic to jazz and hip hop.=20
Alongside his huge output of recordings, including "Scope" and=20
"10th", he has also provided sound design production for a number of=20
other artists projects and clients including the internal voice of=20
Sony's AIBO. More recently he has been concentrating on creating=20
imagery and graphics.
General Magic and Tina Frank (Germany and Austria).
General Magic is a duo consisting of Ramon Bauer and Andi Pieper,=20
co-leaders of the Mego label (along with Peter Rehberg). GM's=20
favourite "playgrounds" are software exploration, ski pistes and=20
motor sport circuits, whilst they also brilliantly demonstrate how to=20
create post-modern hymns with shards of popular music. GM play here=20
with a visual accompaniment - Tina Frank, a graphic artists with=20
uniquely pixelated visions, previously collaborating with GM and=20
others on Mego videos and a former member of the audio/visual band=20
SKOT.
Chris Watson and Jon Wozencroft (UK)
Previously a member of Cabaret Voltaire and the Hafler Trio, Chris=20
Watson now works as a sound recordist specialising in natural history=20
film, tv & radio. His recent work includes the BBC's Life of Mammals=20
and a number acclaimed of audio releases on the Touch label=20
(http://www.touch.demon.co.uk). Jon Wozencroft is the editor of=20
Touch, a filmmaker and photographer. He has worked with Chris on the=20
CDs 'Stepping into the Dark' and 'Outside the Circle of Fire' as well=20
as performing with him at Ars Electronica 2000. This live performance=20
fuses Jon's film and photography with Chris' creative sound design=20
through the theme of 'the weather'.
=46our artists commissioned for Lovebytes' DSP3 publication also=20
perform live audio/visual sets:
@c and Lia (Portugal and Austria)
@c + Lia present a live generated audiovisual performance using=20
computers as their instruments and sound and image programming that=20
allow them to improvise over pre-defined composition structures.
Nullpointer
Nullpointer mixes generative composition and synthesis, using the=20
Pure Data DSP system, utilising a number of live triggers to=20
manipulate and direct the composition which is then translated into=20
geometric visual forms. This creates a unique audio-visual=20
environment for each performance and forms a direct relationship=20
between realtime generation of sound and image.
Kurt Ralske
"rriot" -- a real-time audio-visual improvisation by Kurt Ralske,=20
created with his Auvi software.
a revolution - a revelation - a reversal.
revision / fo-rever / revulsion.
=46ilm screenings include new work from Warp Films by Chris Morris, Tom=20
Jenkinson (Squarepusher) and the latest promo for Aphex Twin. A=20
special selection from the Film Council's 'Digital Shorts' and 'Viro'=20
internet short film commissions. There will be an exclusive screening=20
of Channel Four's 'MESH' computer animation commissions.
Exhibitions
The festival launches 15 February with the first major international=20
exhibition by Japanese artists' group minim++ (Motoshi Chikamori,=20
Kyoko Kunoh and Yasuaki Kakehi) at the Site Gallery, Sheffield. The=20
exhibition is made up of four installations representing a body of=20
work that combines traditional Japanese iconography and interactive=20
computer systems. minim++ develop their own experimental computer=20
interfaces using video projection, stylised hand drawn animation,=20
interactive sensor technology and custom built computer programs.
Motoshi Chikamori is one of the many artists who will be visiting=20
Sheffield to present work during three days of special events 20-22=20
March at the Showroom Cinema. The programme includes a series of=20
events led by Aardman Animation. Best known for the Oscar winning=20
adventures of Wallace and Gromit, Aardman has entered the field of=20
computer generated animation (CGI) with a string of highly successful=20
tv commercials and pop promos. Their hands-on workshops,=20
presentations and screenings will emphasise the importance of=20
traditional character animation in the production of CGI animation=20
and digital special effects. Apple Computers will be supporting=20
workshops and demonstrating their latest systems for animation, video=20
and multimedia production.
Lovebytes is launching two new publications to coincide with the festival:

Background
The Lovebytes Festival provides a platform for new computer based=20
work at the frontiers of digital film, television, music, art and=20
design. It is also the showcase for the work that Lovebytes directly=20
supports, as an organisation, throughout the year. Lovebytes Ltd. is=20
an independent non-profit company, established in 1994 by Jon=20
Harrison and Janet Jennings who continue to drive the organisation.=20
Lovebytes has generated over =A32million of investment to support=20
experimental and innovative work with computers. Through its=20
commissioning programmes Lovebytes provides funding, resources and,=20
perhaps most importantly, the freedom for artists to develop and show=20
their work on an international stage. The Festival is the point where=20
all the strands of Lovebytes' activity come together a stimulating=20
creative environment for networking with national and international=20
visitors and a prestigious event for the Yorkshire region where small=20
businesses and local practitioners can gain international exposure=20
and recognition with opportunities.
Lovebytes 2003 is taking part in ART SHEFFIELD 03 20 March - 26=20
April, during which time, contemporary art events will be taking=20
place at all the city's major galleries and project spaces as well as=20
at non-gallery venues and public sites. Contemporary art by national=20
and international artists will relate to the city and the urban=20
experience. Art Sheffield 03 is coordinated by Sheffield Contemporary=20
art Forum.
