audio interface cards for real time processing

hello,

i am considering getting a multichannel (up to 8 channels) soundcard for 
real-time sound processing using max-msp, for live audio performances and 
multichannel installations (using live microphone signal). i've been looking 
at the motu 828 (8 channels in-out with preamps), which works through 
firewire, but have been told that firewire audio interfaces seem to have a 
bit more latency and cpu overhead than something based on a PCI card. i have 
tested the echo mona card (4 preamps-xlr-trs, 6 outs) through PCI card, 
which worked fine, but has now unfortunately been discontinued.  someone at 
cycling 74 recommended the RME Hammerfall DSP system, which, along with the 
Multiface breakout box, seems to a favourite among MAX-MSP users. i'm also 
looking for something in a decent price range.

if anyone out there has user opinions, product recommendations for this, i 
would really appreciate your suggestions. this module/card is for a desktop 
machine (and possibly laptop compatibility). also should be compatible with 
protools free version.
