((( soundbytes ))) live performance series

April 12, 8pm (Saturday): vidnaObmana w/ Dreams in Exile ($5-10
Suggested Donation)

Avant-garde sound composer/musician Illusion of Safety (Dan Burke) and
vidnaObmana will perform as part of the ongoing soundbytes@SOUNDVISION
series. These notable sound artists create atmospheric, ambient and
layered noise environments. Composing from both electronic and organic
sources, these artists contribute to the cultural evolution of music
that shifts abruptly from sight to sound imposing and enrapturing its
audience in blatant soundscapes filled with sonic atmosphere and an
experimental edge. Illusion of Safety (IOS) will perform on Friday,
April 4th at 8pm. This represents is his only West Coast live
performance this season. Working in pluralistic styles with multiple
collaborators, IOS has "curiously sidesteped the elements of
post-industrial, experimental and ambient music in the creation of
something fascinating and un-categorizable," [sic],-i/e. Unable to
categorize his work into one style, each release, live performance, and
sometimes individual piece often shifts abruptly from one atmosphere to
another. Leading some to describe his output as schizophrenic, IOS's
work is Decomposition: using obscure sources, exhibiting a strong sense
of balance in structure and sound color, juxtaposing the beautiful and
the disturbing. IOS is an evolving and collaborative effort, making
music utilizing sampling and sequencing technology. IOS was originally
formed as a duo with renowned musician Jim O'Rourke of Sonic Youth and
Stereolab. Since 1983 Dan Burke has worked with many individuals in
combinations of one to twelve members.

On Saturday, April 12th at 8pm the spatial, minimalist sound sculptures
of vidnaObmana (a moniker meaning optical illusion), from Belgium, will
be heard with the enchanting rhythmic electric and acoustic guitar
aesthetics of Portland's own Dreams in Exile. VidnaObmana is a
self-taught electronic musician who has been making sounds for eighteen
years. Having explored many sides of electronic music, the artist
considers his latest work a rebirth of inspiration and spirituality.
Dreams In Exile recently collaborated on vidnaObmana's album, Opera for
Four Fusion Works: Echoes of Steel, which correlates source and
recycling. Dreams in Exile also recreated a vidnaObmana album, River of
Appearance, in which the band's incredible musical expertise and eye for
detail that produces this unique and very ode to the original music. The
instrumentation includes electric and acoustic guitars, mandolin, cello,
trombone and children's voices. Martina Verhoeven, who often designs
album covers for vidnaObmana, will complement the performance with
visual projections of her organic abstract photography.
