Yes: Aleksandr Sokurov. He has done numerous features since the
1980s, including one, "Days of the Eclipse," based on a story by the
Strugatsky brothers (whose "Roadside Picnic" was the basis of
Tarkowskij's "Stalker"), as well as many video works in his "Elegies"
series. In the US, one must count on festivals and museums (and in
Berkeley the PFA) to screen his work, although his recent "Russian
Ark" has miraculously secured distribution here, and his stunning
"Mother and Son" can even be had on DVD. For those to whom
Tarkowskij's most introspective work appeals, this last is
recommended viewing. And although he is not Russian, Bela Tarr is
working in a territory near to Tarkowskij's as well, but with the
exception of "Werckmeister Harmonies" his films are sadly just as
rare as Sokurov's on US screens.
