The curators and organizers of the 3rd annual
once.twice festival of sound and video art in
Baltimore, MD, are pleased to announce a stellar
lineup of performing artists working within the fields
of experimental audio and visual electronic
composition. This year?s event marks another
significant increase in the scope of both quality and
content, extended to a three-night affair from
Thursday, April 17th through Saturday, April 19th, of
2003. The festival is dedicated to bringing the
highest quality of internationally known and
cutting-edge artists across a wide range of aesthetics
and practices in electronic experimentation, while
bringing attention to and encouraging growth within
the burgeoning electronic artistic community of
Baltimore.
The night of Thursday, April 17th will take place in
the Glass Pavillion of Levering Hall, on the South
West quad of the Johns Hopkins University. Featuring
both collaborative and solo performances from
internationally acclaimed minimalist composers Taylor
Deupree and Richard Chartier, this evening of the
festival is dedicated to focused, attentive listening
and audio production that resonates equally within the
spaces of contemporary art and experimental music.
Deupree and Chartier are the well-known forces behind
the joint U.S. labels 12k / Line, and have performed
at such noted festivals as Mutek, Lovebytes,
Transmissions, and Transmediale. Chartier was also a
featured artist at the Whitney Museum Biennial of
2002. The same evening includes an audio performance
by Montreal?s Camp (aka David Turgeon), head of the
notype.com label, and rounding out the roster will be
the local Baltimore sound and video duo of Chris
Mackie and Christina Vantzos, who perform together as
Telia.
On Friday, April 18th, the once.twice festival takes
over Baltimore?s newest and most impressive venue for
electronic dance music, Sonar. Run by Ultraworld?s
Lonnie Fisher and Sonic Soul?s LG Concannon, Sonar was
voted the ?best new club in America? by the URB
magazine reader?s poll of 2002. The once.twice
festival brings to the club side of Sonar a lineup of
highly innovative artists carefully poised between the
worlds of sonic experimentation and dance floor
mayhem. Headlining the evening in their North
American debut will be Berlin producers Soundhack and
Errorsmith, presenting their collaborative cut-up
processed funk techno project Smith-n-Hack.
Montreal?s Crack Haus, the bastard child of techno and
house birthed by artists Deadbeat and Steve Beaupre,
proves to add more off-kilter dance floor rhythms to
the soiree. Cleveland?s Geoff White, known for his
releases on the Force-Inc and Persona record labels,
brings a solid dose of freaky Midwest techno and
tech-house to the plate. The evening will kick off
with a DJ set from pneuma, the co-organizer of the
once.twice festival and resident of Sonar?s
experimental electronic monthly night Treatment.
Saturday, April 19th, the festival wraps up at the
Johns Hopkins University Mattin Center, Ross Jones
Building, with a very special performance from the
heads of San Francisco label Orthlorng Musork, Joshua
Kit Clayton and Sue Costabile. Clayton has produced a
dazzling array of intensely creative audio
compositions for labels such as ~scape, Cytrax, and
Vertical Form, and Costabile?s video work has been
featured at acclaimed events such as Montreal?s Mutek,
Vancouver?s New Forms Festival, and Sonar of
Barcelona. This night, the two will present their
audio-video theater piece entitled ?Interruption?,
which explores the relationship between the
surrounding world of sensorial perception and the
fantasies human beings project upon it. In addition
to her performance with Clayton, Costabile dons her
Sue and the Musorkians guise to team up for an
improvised audio/video performance with label mate
Timeblind, a New York City producer whose longstanding
engagement with electronic music has found him
performing alongside such strange luminaries as Kid
606, Jim O?Rourke, Richie Hawtin, and Arto Lindsay.
Berlin?s Errorsmith does solo audio this night in
tandem with New York City video artist Giles Hendrix,
and Cleveland?s well-known a/v combo of Twine + Phase4
complete the list of out of town perfomers.
themoonstealingproject (co-curator of the once.twice
festival) and video artist Paul Simpson complete the
bill for the lineup, adding a Baltimore presence to
the evening?s affair.
