Larry Kucharz - "Unit 34: Assorted Tracks"

=E2=80=9C ... By contrast, Unit 34: Assorted Tracks is fundamentally based=
 entirely=20
on electronically produced rhythmic patterns juxtaposed with melodic=20
fragments in a series of catchy and energetic pieces, each with a=20
fundamental rhythm and complex undercurrents and overlays. Back on the=20
farm, we call this stuff techno, but Kucharz' approach is a fresh and=20
novel one that uses many of the tonal elements from his cyberchoral and=20
audiochrome toolbox and moves them into a more kinetic application.=20
Some of the material here leans toward the academic side, being a bit=20
stark and mechanical but nonetheless explorative, while other pieces=20
are furiously busy and complex, overlaying rhythms and counter-rhythms=20
and shifting gears with regularity, producing some amazing grooves.=20
Especially noteworthy is the closing piece "Blue Through City Night=20
Lights", which uses voice samples in novel ways combined with=20
electronics over a slower rhythm. Unlike the more mature "electrochoral"=20
style of CyberChoralColors, one can sense that Kucharz=20
is still in the growth phase with this style of music, with a lot of=20
ideas remaining to be discovered.=E2=80=9D - Peter Thelen Expos=C3=A9 www.ex=
