Fantastic, I saw the documentary on audio archiving a few monthes ago on the
history channel. Really facinating stuff. It's such a mental twist to be
forced to realize how impermanent things we take for granted are. So much
music gets washed away by time. If you think about it, all this microsound
could be all but gone in a few generations. It's scary. On a brighter
note, the documentary got me back into Woody Guthrie. Read the lyrics to
"Do Re Me", his criticism of California is as fresh today as it was when he
wrote it...

DO RE MI
  by Woody Guthrie

Lots of folks back East they say, leaving home every day
Beating the hot old dusty way to the California line
Cross the desert sands they roll, getting out of the old dust bowl
Think they're going to a sugar bowl, but here's what they find
Now police at the port of entry say,
"you're number fourteen thousand for today"

Oh, if you ain't got the do re mi, folks, you ain't got the do re mi
Why you better get back to beautiful Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Georgia,
Tennessee
California is a garden of Eden, a paradise to live in or see
But believe it or not, you won't find it so hot
If you ain't got the do re mi

You want to buy a house or a farm, that can't do nobody harm
Or take your vacation by the mountain or sea
Don't swap your old cow for a car, you'd better stay right where you are
Better take this little tip from me:
Cause I look through the want ads every day
And the headlines in the papers always say

Oh, if you ain't got the do re mi, folks, you ain't got the do re mi
Why you better get back to beautiful Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Georgia,
Tennessee
California is a garden of Eden, a paradise to live in or see
But believe it or not, you won't find it so hot
If you ain't got the do re mi
