Concert and field recording: MD a good idea?
I'm in the market for a thingy to record both concerts (mostly piano
recitals) as well as for doing field recording.
My research seems to indicate that a minidisc recorder would be the ideal
solution for this, being very light/portable, not too expensive and offering
quite good sound quality.
Does this seem factually correct? Are there other options around that would
be preferable (really, the only one I see is a portable DAT recorder, but I
think these go for much higher prices).
The only drawback of the minidisc solution seems to be that there is
currently no way (thanks Sony) to transfer the contents of a MD using
digital out: it seems that the USB port that equips most newer models can
only be used to transfer music FROM the computer to the minidisc unit.
But I guess I can live with that if that's the only drawback and if there is
no preferable alternative to minidisc for live/field recording of good
quality at a reasonable price.
Also, any ideas on good, not too expensive microphones to be used in the
situations I described (concert, field recording)?
Any advice/comments would be greatly appreciated. (I know there have been
discussions regarding microphones previously... but, as there are no
archives for this list...)
