Laura Fritz | new work =20
"Fritz bridges the gap between art and science. She approaches her =
sculptures as an impartial biologist or DNA researcher, constructing =
tightly controlled and detached experiments. The results are finely =
tuned, minimalist, kinetic sculptures." (Portland Mercury)
"I have always been interested in systems of natural occurrences and the =
common human need to feel in control of them. I am particularly =
interested in the implications of manipulating a system, intentionally =
or not, before actually understanding it. While observing a natural =
occurrence a person may perceive a repetitive pattern and begin to form =
a definition of the system. When an unexpected or unexplained element =
interrupts the pattern the resulting tension brings several questions to =
mind. Will the person seek to understand the system with the unexpected =
elements or take action to manipulate it into a more convenient or =
familiar system? If the person chooses to seek understanding, will the =
act of study and the desire to manipulate alter the system and skew the =
results of any observation? With this in mind, could any information =
gained be trusted as objective and true? Would it ever be possible for =
complete understanding of a system to occur?"

j.frede | selected phonographies
The selected phonographies installation was designed to recreate natural =
atmospheres in a gallery environment. Phonographies, or field =
recordings, were made for this installation throughout the United States =
and Europe and have been arranged on 6 different CDs to reflect the =
natural acoustics from which they were recorded. Composed tracks were =
also created using slightly modified recordings to create new spatial =
experiences. The audio will be played through 24; 2" speakers that will =
be hanging approximately 2 inches from the ceiling. The recordings will =
focus on sounds that are above the listener, leaves rustling in the =
wind, passing traffic on an overhead bridge, a circling helicopter. =
Various recording techniques were used to best capture the movement and =
acoustics of the location from which it was made.

j.frede will perform a live set on May 2, creating a site specific =
performance for this event using the installation as an instrument.
