Re: [thewire] //Copyright monopoly and creative sounds
Hey Eric,
As someone who works in copyright (mainly in glorified data entry) it's easy o
see how the copyright laws can enrich and protect those who have great
artistic/technological talent/ideas but do not have access to the means of
exploiting them through production or distribution in the manner that a lasrge
multinational would - it helps the little guy get a return from his or her
labour etc.
On the other hand I find it difficult to see how retaining copyright for 75
years after the death of the owner could seriously be justified. What did the
succerssors of the writer/inventor put into the work? How could they possibly
justify a share in proceeds? It's nauseatingly obvious that these laws exist in
the US and UK (the 50 year limit in .au and elsewhere is a little bit more
reasonable) to protect the incomes of companies such as Disney or any major
record label too lazy or cheap to invest in new ideas (who wants to encourage
them! They could be dangerous - they could upset the status quo). No doubt they
will try to lobby your MP in 25 years to extend the law further.....
Anyway that's my 5 cents.
cheers
Chris
