It is essential that my work be examined in relationship to my personal his=
tory. The work produced earlier in my career with the artist-led visual art=
s group Fine Rats International is crucial in respect to my ongoing concern=
s for the site-specific. Exploring space whether in the urban landscape lik=
e 'Under Spaghetti Junction' in Birmingham, UK or fixed within the walls of=
 interior spaces like 'Breathing Space' an installation designed for Artspa=
ce in Sydney, Australia, the investigation centre's around the space and it=
s relationship to an audience. Much of my work deals with the specific loca=
tion in which the artwork is placed, its processes and context respond to a=
 series of issues that include contemporary culture, architecture, politics=
 and anti/social behaviours.

Direct action between artwork and audience drives a clear desire to confron=
t contemporary issues, social order and the transparent borders within whic=
h societies exists. These societies are creating and pushing a constant nee=
d for the unknown, the unexplored, culminating in a spiral of destruction a=
nd mayhem...we like it like that, don't we?

At EI Huis, during a two-week residency I will examine the architectural, s=
ocial, political and cultural context of the space, street and city in rela=
tionship to each other and to my existence within its dynamic. The result w=
ill be a fusion of artistic responses developed over a deliberately brief t=
imescale exploring how this artistic enquiry or 'language' can both be prod=
uced through spontaneity and historical understanding.

Het is essentieel om mijn werk te beschouwen in verhouding tot mijn persoon=
lijke geschiedenis. De werken die ik in het begin van mijn loopbaan samen m=
et het kunstenaarscollectief Fine Rats International produceerde zijn cruci=
aal voor mijn huidige in situ praktijk. Of het onderzoeken van 'ruimte' pla=
atsvindt in een stedelijke omgeving, zoals 'Under Spaghetti Junction' in Bi=
rmingham (VK) of binnen de beslotenheid van binnenruimtes zoals 'Breathing =
Space', een installatie ontwikkeld voor Artspace in Sydney (Australi=EB), d=
e kern van het=20concept blijft de relatie tussen ruimte en publiek. De meeste=
 van mijn werken hebben betrekking tot de specifieke locatie waar het kunst=
werk geplaatst wordt. Hun proces en context verwijzen naar een aantal onder=
werpen als hedendaagse cultuur, architectuur,=20
politiek en anti/sociale gedragingen.

De rechtstreekse actie tussen kunstwerk en publiek verwekt de behoefte om h=
edendaagse thema's, maatschappelijke orde en de transparante grenzen waarbi=
nnen gemeenschappen bestaan met elkaar te confronteren. Deze gemeenschappen=
 verwekken en onderhouden een continue behoefte voor het onbekende, het ono=
nderzochte, culminerend in een spiraal van afbraak en herrie...daar houden =
we van, of niet soms?=20

In het EI Huis, tijdens een twee weken durende residentie wil ik de archite=
cturale, sociale, politieke en culturele context van de ruimte, straat en s=
tad in verhouding tot elkaar en tot mijn bestaan binnen de dynamiek ervan o=
nderzoeken. Het resultaat zal een fusie zijn van artistieke reacties ontwik=
keld over een bewust korte periode, waarmee wordt nagegaan hoe dit artistie=
k onderzoek of artistieke 'taal' geproduceerd kan worden zowel door spontan=
iteit als door historisch begrip.
