Re: [microsound] arranging & the like

Tim,
I've thought about this some. My observation is that a lot of microsound sounds the way a lot of minimalist painting looks, in that the arrangement is not in juggling lots of separate forms, but in creating a surface that is all of a piece, but constantly changing at the same time. Like looking at a wall (brick, painted) - it's all the same thing, but the variety within that limitation is endless.

I had a strict and classical composition education, so it's hard not to think in terms of sections, thematic forms, variation, transitions, whatever.

Technically, I think a lot of microsound compositions begin from the ease of creating loops in software that overlap, fall out, return, and then embracing what happens in a variety of textural layers, rather than following some narrative of exposition, tension, release, as a determined linear progression.

It's an interesting area that I don't think has been brought up very much here. Looking forward to what others are thinking.
